Our top tips for winter rides

With snow on its way and temperatures plummeting, we don’t blame you for wanting to lock your bike away for the winter. However, here at Bike2Work scheme we know all about benefits of a ride.

That’s why we’ve put together a list with some essential advice for our would-be winter cyclists.

Staying in may keep you toasty, but after a few minutes out on the road, we promise, you’ll be just as warm on your bike!

1. Take it slow.

We know you’re cold but there’s no need to rush! Once you’re pedalling, you’ll start to warm up pretty quick. Cycling fast in hazardous conditions like heavy rain or ice can easily lead to accidents and injuries. When cycling over ice, try to avoid pedalling or breaking as little as possible as this could cause you to slip and fall. Take your time, be careful and don’t put yourself at risk!

2. Layers upon layers upon layers...

With how unpredictable British weather can often be, layering up is a no brainer. Wearing lots of layers, instead of bulky winter-wear, will help keep you nice and toasty. If you start to feel like you’re overheating, just remove a layer or two until you feel comfortable again. We’d recommend investing in a good quality waterproof jacket, gloves and hat at the bare minimum.

3. Keep your bike clean.

Dirt and grime can really harm your bike, so regular cleaning and maintenance are really important if you want your bike to survive the winter. Thanks to all of the salt and grit on the roads, your bike will get dirtier a lot quicker during winter. Stay on top of the grime by giving your bike a quick hose down after every ride minimum. Getting into this habit will also help you get to know your bike better and spot any maintenance you might need to sort before heading out again. Try to pay close attention to all of your cycles moving parts (i.e. chain, gears, cables), otherwise you might end up stranded mid-ride!

4. Avoid hazards.

Puddles are everywhere in winter! Try to stay in the centre of the road where cars have already cleared away the snow and avoid gutters (Where you’re more likely to come across puddles or ice.). Do your best to watch out for slippery surfaces whilst cycling and if your usual path is too hazardous don’t be afraid to change your route.
